The initial product line was a commercial grade of shelving,
racks and material handling equipment for industrial warehouses.
The volume of business for this first year was $156,391.00.
A trend was started at this time. Each year, two or more products
related to the material-handling field were added to the list
of products available for sale and installation. Today Commercial
Shelving is considered to be the most complete Material Handling
distributor in Hawaii.
The method of customer contact at this time was through outside
sales as well as over-the-counter walk-in trade. This changed
in the mid 70's, when the State of Hawaii changed its method
of purchasing and took over the school system from the various
counties.
Then
Commercial Shelving was divided into two divisions. The first
being outside retail sales, referred to as Commercial Shelving
and a new division referred to as Contract Sales. The method
of sales for the new division is through written quotes. Contract
Sales now accounts for half of the sales volume of Commercial
Shelving.
During the year 1976, at the request of several long time
customers, a line of forklifts was acquired. With this acquisition,
it was realized that there was a need for Commercial Shelving
to have its own service department and inventory of parts.
In the course of this time, a small business called State
High Lift was performing service and maintenance work for
Commercial Shelving. Upon the retirement of its owner, the
business was purchased by Commercial Shelving. Today State
High Lift is a leader in the lifting equipment rental business.
With the attainment of State High-Lift, the three divisions
of Commercial Shelving were established as it exists today.
Its annual sales volume varies between 5 to 10 million dollars.
